PC, YV and India’s Inflation battle

The Fm Mr PC is desperate to curb inflation and is targeting each and every component that has flared up in the WPI basket, as best as he can manage to .

The Monetary Policy Statement of RBI Gov. Y V Reddy is out and the RBI has hiked CRR by 25 bps; while the Repo, reverse repo rates have been left intact.

Will this really help curb inflation in the short term or even the long term ?

That too, when the rupee is still pegged to the Dollar in a tight range between 39 and 40. Whatever Reddy does Bernanke is sure to undo, with his expected 25 bps rate cut tonite. The Fed is in a major dilemma and so is the RBI cause these measures are ad-hoc and will produce little results as the private banks may contemplate increase in PLR or harden lending rates.

The flow of dollars to India is showing no sign of decreasing as shown by Rbi Forex reserves figures, so is the eagerness of the RBI to hold the Rupee peg as shown by the above chart. The rupee is still pegged to the Dollar in a tight range between 39 and 40.

The growth of commodities as an asset class is unprecedented, as investors world over have lost faith in the stock markets and the bond insurers. Gold is a traditional inflation hedge and it is also close to its all time highs. Speculation in Oil is rife these days, as old timer Dan Dicker comments .

Oil is now at 120$ a barrel and OPEC President Chakib Khelil does not rule out oil prices reaching $200 a barrel, even though supply is adequate, because the market is driven by the dollar’s slide, He added: “The prices are high due to the fact of the recession in the United States and the economic crisis which has touched several countries, a situation which has an effect on the devaluation of the dollar, and therefore each time the dollar falls one percent, the price of the barrel rises by $4, and of course vice versa,” he was quoted as saying in brief remarks to journalists on Sunday. read Yahoo news.

I dont know what will happen of our Poor oil marketing and producing companies in that event , as the communists wont allow an oil price hike…As it is the Finance ministry is haggling over issuing last yrs oil bonds to psus like Ongc, Ioc etc

The Fiscal policy of the Govt is in Shambles and SAA is estimating the overall (central+state ) fiscal deficit at 10% of gdp, and as oil price goes up, the current account deficit balloons as we import 3/4 of our energy needs.

India’s balance of payments turned to a deficit of $2.5 billion in the quarter through December, from a surplus of $18 billion in the previous quarter, Bloomberg data show.

The central bank, battling inflation near a 3 1/2-year high, may be reluctant to let currency gains to temper prices as the nation’s balance of payments is widening, said Rajeev Malik, a senior economist at JPMorgan Chase & Co. in Singapore. The currency “appears poised to weaken further against the dollar in the near term.” read bloomberg.

This would surely mean more inflation and higher rates in the medium term, as even the pds procurement and fresh crops arrival into the markets would do little to stem the price rise problem.

The question is will the US change policy stance and move from their current weak dollar policy to the Strong Dollar policy and what point, oil and inflation will force them to rethink current strategy ?

The solution for India however lies in letting the Rupee float freely and appreciate to reasonable levels, just like Sing$ and the Ringit. No wonder Ajay says It’s the currency, stupid.

Karnataka preparing for Polls

Now Karnataka will soon go to the polls, that after Kumaraswamy and the JDU played the role of Prerna( of Kasauti Zindagi ke) in the karnataka political drama shuffling between the Congress I and BJP, until the Centre dissolved the assembly after high drama. I has written about the amazing Gowdas in one of my posts sometime ago.

This will be a big event for Congress which is facing the Inflation heat in the Center, and the result will probably decide if the govt will prefer to dissolve parliament early or continue with the circus.

The three main contenders for the CM post will most probably be

Yediyurappa – BJP

Krishna – Congress I

Kumaraswamy – Janta Dal Scular

Looks like there is a secret alliance of Congress, JDS and Bangarappa (samajwadi )(ex congress).

The scular CNNIBN poll conducted by the one and only Yogendra Yadav and team of the Centre for Study of Developing Societies (CSDS) is also conveniently out, and no guesses here. As in Gujarat, they are indicating a clear mandate for the Congress.

My Conclusion – Either the result will be a hung Assembly like before or BJP might just about win this time.

Laws and the Indian State

Even after having so many laws, and just the Central Enactment Index spanning 22 pages, why are Indians so lawless ?

Is India one of the most oppressive and over-legislated countries in the free world ? Is it better to have fewer but effectively enforced laws , or do u subscribe to more the merrier principle?

Do Indians need a change ?

The Heat is on!

Looks like the Country and especially parts of Northern, Central and Western India are under a Heat Spell.

So folks, be prepared – keep ur goggles, ur टोपि, छत्रि (cap n umbrella not कोन्डोम) n ur sunscreens and aloe vera and cucumber gells ready and start carrying ur water bottles, cause the Heat is on and Orissa and even Calcutta has just witnessed its first heat related deaths. If April is like this i wonder whats in store for May ? Remember the Octobers 41*c?

BBC predicts 45 41*c tomorrow

In Mumbai, we had a late winter and a chilly one at that, and are now facing an early summer, the Temperature is climbing day by day.. From 34*c to 37*c on the max. A whole 2 or 3 deg above normal. From 34*c to 37*c. Though the Weather bureau shows a rather benign 34 and 36*c, just like the Govt approved WPI inflation , things are far worse in reality, with humidity at a sultry 78% and 63% on an average and igoogle saying 38*c for tomorrow and BBC shocking me with its predictions.

Tansen wherever u r – We need some Megh Malhar pronto

Mumbai is over stressed, overpopulated and in May and October it gets super duper HOT! I meant not hot -whistle – wink kind – but literally boiling hot.Blame it on the relentless suburbanization and urbanization or on the merciless cutting of mangroves Mumbai is slowly becoming Nagpurish… and a bit extreme i think. Looks like this time we are facing the grind rather early 😦 The last two days i was feeling rather down and couldnt get work done, thanks to not having an air conditioner and was wondering if something was wrong with me or with the weather and climate in general. As i write, i sneeze nonstop cause i think ive caught a nasty cold thanks to the fan.

God knows how people in Chandrapur in Nagpur a survive this heat..

Only in India 1

Guess what India is a Democratic Republic … well is it ? if u read on u will think more than a democratic it looks like a banana republic.. Wow!!

The Government has come up with a ‘code of conduct’ for secondary school teachers most of who are underpaid or late paid (especially in govt grant schools), including those in private schools.

Education Dept in Maharashtra is planning / proposing to ban teachers in Maharashtra’s private schools from investing in stock market. source ET

Reason being they consider it as GAMBLING !!! (looks like some babus have been burnt bad by the market bust and the Reliance and other Ipos )

Worse they expect that the teachers and family to invest only in cooperative banks and credit societies.

If u didn’t know, some credit societys’ and coop banks in hinterlands mostly owned / controlled by most Congress and NCP Polliticians are heavily mismanaged – and a few are worse than the Z group companies and solely survive due to the Maharashtra government largess, something that has made the state having a debt burden taller than Kalsubai the tallest peak in the state , so large that a part of the Mantralaya was attached by the DRT. Without the Rbis moral suasions some urban coop banks like the SIC bank, etc would also have gone under, with the moneys of their depositors.

Isnt this Bizzare? Has something like this been done even in a communist country like China ?

Funnily there was a fraud in The Teachers’ Cooperative Bank in Nashik sometime in 1998.

The proposal also puts restrictions on investments and business by family members of the teachers. If any member has an insurance policy, or is involved in insurance business or any other business, it needs to be reported to the Deputy Director of education, according to the proposal.

It also stipulates that teacher should not marry a person whose ex-partner is alive and also bars teachers from entering into a marriage contract sans permission from school management. The proposal also adds that marriage to a foreigner should be reported to the management.

The proposal also puts restrictions on teachers’ participation in social or political movement and asks them to convince family members to do so. They would also be required to inform the management if a family member wants to contest election.

Why not add another proposal to make them only have 2 kids or less ? Id support it. Are we behind an Iron curtain or what?

DTH Interoperability Free channels and the Indian Scenario.

DTH arena will hot up real soon as new players like Reliance and Airtel will come out with their service in the next few months. There will be more IPTV players too.

On the customer front, the scene is changing and people are waking up to their rights.

Vijay Adhia has filed a writ petition before the Supreme Court demanding that the central government be directed to ensure that all DTH service providers ensure technical compatibility and effective inter-operability among the set top boxes provided by different service providers.

In 2001, the central government decided to permit DTH service, which changed TV viewing forever. The cable operator became optional for many households that decided to get directly linked.

The license condition, the petition said, clearly said that “the open architecture (non-proprietary) set top box, which will ensure technical compatibility and effective interoperability among different DTH service providers, shall have such specifications as laid down by the government from time to time.

This case will be very interesting, as most current operators have boxes that have their specific software and locking systems, barring consumers from tuning them. Plus they have different encryption technologies like conax and irdeto which means different decryption method. Thats not all, newer players are shifting to mpg4 format to make optimal bandwidth use.

Most channels are going pay these days and worse the amt of adds that are run on these so called pay channels is a cause of concern, and this should be monitored by the TRAI .

Currently, the DTH operators choose the channels that the consumer views, which should be legitimate right of the viewer, worse most channels are packaged in bundles and people end up paying for plenty of unwanted channels – a big grouse among consumers like me who doesnt see most of the prime hindi entertainment channels.

The operators add and remove fta channels their at free will contrary to law that specifies that the operator has to notify the consumer of the change well in advance – Something that is done very frequently by DD Direct plus a FTA govt broadcaster using public funds .

There is a constant war between the Operators and the Channels on charges , and net net the consumers suffer. There could be merit in implementing a CAS like alternative wherein cost per channel is either capped and people have the right to choose what they want to see.

But this is a distant dream, if one sees the record of the  TRAI  and that of the  Operators

What do u think? Please comment

Politics and Prise rise

There is a worldwide price rise issue or problem, and essential commodity prices are rising and along with it is the genie called Inflation. Worse for the developing and the underdeveloped countries it is reaching crices level cause food constitutes 35to 50% of the wage bill as family s are large and generally depend upon a single earner.

Here in India both the Congress/UPA party in power and the primary opposition party the Bjp and the suspect opposition that gives vital outside votes – the Communists are playing politics on this matter as best as they can. There are dharnas and protests everywhere blaming the govt for price rise while the govt , defends itself blaming things on international pricing conditions.

But is this Only a big show in front of the press cameras simply for public consumption ?

As i see it most politicians are immune to the common mans problems they live like kings in plush govt. bungalows and haver everything paid for by the taxpayer. Plus how can u trust them when the politicians openly make false claims without any remorse or guilt?

This is what happens during lok sabha debates on price rise –

MPs go missing during debate on price rise

Price rise egg on Left

here are some excerpts…

Divided they might be on most issues but in this, MPs’ apathy cut across party lines. The thin attendance only seemed to strengthen the view that Parliament has often boiled down to attention-getting in Zero Hour.

Treasury benches (Congress) wore a deserted look as did the BJP rows.

A similar lack of attendance has been seen in the past when important issues like the agrarian crisis and farmers’ suicides have been discussed. Even routinely, during afternoon sessions, the assembly in Lok Sabha dwindles to less than 40-50 members. It is not much better in Rajya Sabha. Almost lending credibility to the view that it does not pay to be in the House, the media gallery is also thinly staffed.

The BJP and the Left, which have been crying the loudest for the common man burdened by price rise, cut a sorry figure in the Lok Sabha when the issue was discussed today.

On procurement of pds foodgrains – the left is on a real bad wicket the Bjp states have done much better.

“Bengal’s track record is one of the worst in procurement. Out of 147 lakh tonnes of rice output in the state, only three lakh tonnes have been procured there,” the minister said.

States like Andhra Pradesh, Orissa, Chhattisgarh, Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan have over 90 per cent success rate. But Bengal, along with Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, is very bad.
