Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead…Review

Rated: R
Runtime: 2 hrs 3 mins
Theatrical Release: Oct 26, 2007

Before the Devil knows you’re Dead is a dark suspense thriller directed by Sidney Lumet and shot on hd video. It stars Philip Seymour Hoffman of the Capote fame, Ethan Hawke, Marisa Tomei and Albert Finney. The title comes from the Irish saying: “May you be in heaven half an hour before the devil knows you’re dead”.

This movie is about a typical American dysfunctional family, cash strapped brothers and a plan to rob a mom and pop jewelery store and its consequences. Read the Synopsis here.

Though the movie is well directed, it has an ordinary plot and doesn’t meet expectations. It has been cut rather unconventionally with flash forwards and flashbacks, which i suspect are intentional so as to break continuity and maintain some element of suspense. It gradually slows down and a person can tend to loose interest.

The movie has a very intense storyline and a believable portrayal by realistic characters who show a range of emotions.

It starts with a bang (loud sex scene) and continues with a lot of realistic scenes , including some graphic nude scenes by Marisa Tomei. The good thing is that characters are not dehumanized, and you can see multiple shades in each character.

It also reflects American society to an extent showing a dysfunctional family, drug usage and the borrow and spend culture. This movie is definitely a one time see for the more patient and mature audience.

My Ratings: 2.5*** of 5*****.
