The govt seems to have amazing control on the local private press and media both print and broadcast media (maybe it is because of all that add spend and govts allowing them more money for its adverts). When the NPT leg of the deal was being negotiated in Vienna and an agreement was finally achieved, it was touted as victory to this current govt its team and its negotiating abilities. Some of the vocal channels like Star News and Aaj Tak etc even went ahead with the now signature Singh is King and gave full credit to Mr Singh and his team and especially to the current DM Mr Pronob Mukharjees meetings, when any informed source especially in the world media attributed it to the big US push.
Here is my take on the deal On the NSG Waiver
To get a better perspective one should start following the Post for its connections and deep insight in the Us mainstream politics. Now the skeletons seem to be tumbling out of the closet, as the backroom dealings slowly unfold.
First it was about the secret letter,
So is the contention of the UPA/Congress Govt that under the deal the supply is assured true or are they trying to pull a royal bluff ? that too when the US is in a far superior position of bargaining than India and when our Pm explains ” Insofar as the issue of testing is concerned, our position is well known. We have a unilateral moratorium on testing. This is reflected in the India-US Joint Statement of July 18, 2005.”
Now it is this revelation in the Post
“In the discussions about how to handle enrichment and reprocessing, it was made clear that nobody had any plans to transfer such technologies to India in the foreseeable future,” said a senior U.S. official, speaking on the condition of anonymity because he was describing private diplomatic exchanges. While such statements were not binding, he said, the NSG countries recognized that they were planning to “tighten up” the rules on such sales in the near future, allowing them to achieve the same restrictions on India later without causing a diplomatic rupture now.
From the start everyone knew that there would be stoppage of uranium supply if we did tests, even Kalam knew it , when he said India could test in supreme national interests… Now if the key issue to sign this deal – getting out of the technology denial regime is looks shaky is the deal worth the paper it is written on ?
In any case it is better to be very careful during its operationalising phase or else the aam admi in this country will feel like Gump
From Forrest Gump: Oh, yes sir. Bit me right in the Butt-tox. They said it was a million dollar wound, but the army must keep that money ’cause I still haven’t seen a nickel of that million dollars.
