Rape in India ..

Two great posts about rape and how one must not jump to conclusions in such situations.

Read : Karuna Parekhs post in the Sunday Guardian.

Because rape, let’s face it, is not about sex. It’s more about assertion than insertion…more about humiliation, domination, and at the bottom of it all, insecurity. Beneath the insecurity though is a lack of education and awareness that a society that’s organised on the basis of institutionalised bigotry and barbarity has failed to give its members.

Punishment is all very well, but how are you going to change the very fabric of a stained society? You may cut down a poisoned tree but what of its roots?

Read : Seema Mustafas post on the suicide of Khurshid Anwar.

The decision to allow a drunk and unwell colleague to stay over at night on a September evening, came back to haunt him months after when the girl tied up with a shrill woman activist, who has never found anything criminal in the rape of women in Gujarat in 2002, to leak the story to the media. Within minutes the media trial began, and the final straw it seems was when a television news channel known for turning truth into fiction, and lies into the truth, apparently did a show vilifying Anwar.

Unable to cope he killed himself by jumping off the building he lived in. He did not leave a suicide note but the police have found a diary in which he has written of his complete innocence, and how he was being framed by motivated rivals.

The world is filled with bad men no doubt , but all men are not rapists and women should not automatically consider men as molesters and rapists.

Not all men brushing past a woman are doing it for cheap thrills , they may very well be late to attend to their ailing parents. Women should also make sure that they are not blocking the footpaths !
